I’m actually very fed up of the word Vintage being thrown around recklessly. Today was just the final straw when I overheard this statement in a conversation between two individuals, “I bought this vintage scarf from H&M and some other vintage bag from peackocks.” Just to elaborate, vintage in regards to clothing means clothing that is originally from another era. So this item of clothing would have been previously worn and probably belonged in an era that is not the present. A piece of clothing passed down from your grandmother which she owned when she was 18 is vintage, a scarf, made in columbia last month, brand new and purchased from H&M is certainly not vintage. If an item of clothing looks vintage then its just that, it looks vintage or has a vintage feel…that will be all. On that subject some wonderful vintage pictures I came across today….

Whilst on the vintage subject, this lady was and still is a personification of the word vintage, she is none other than Audrey Hepburn. Best known for her role in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” Audrey as well as being a very talented actress was also a humanitarian. She worked for UNICEF since the 1950’s and this was as a result of spending her childhood in Netherlands during the second World War. Its nice to see that once upon time, celebrities used their publicity for good causes for genuine reasons and not for personal benefit…..and did I mention how beautifull a woman she was…

aaaawwwwww look at the young audrey…

Keep it uju people.

The Original Mr RAS

This Christmas, we were looking through old photos that my dad had scanned in to the computer. I came across some great old photos of my grandpa (the original Mr RAS) that I just had to share. I always knew that he had great style, but it wasn’t until recently that I really appreciated it. Below is the photo that motivated me to write this post.

Pink blazer with tortoise shell glasses, the guy is rocking it.

Tai Chi In China

Suited Up On The Great Wall

Looking suave in front of a junk boat

Wearing a ‘classic’ rugby

At my dads graduation. I now own the belt that he is wearing in this photo.

These photos really portray the great personal style that my grandpa has, and for which I will always remember him for. The only thing I want to know is where the hell that pink blazer went.

Keep it UJU

To begin this decade, I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year. I was inspired to write this post sitting on the train on the way to watch the London fireworks.

It begins with one site I like to follow pretty regularly, The Sartorialist. Scott Schuman (The Photographer) concentrates on the small details in what people are wearing and set up his website to show what he believed “was a disconnect between what I was selling in the showroom and what I was seeing real people (really cool people) wearing in real life“. Visiting this website has made me spend more time really looking at what people are wearing, and try to imagine what Scott would say if he was writing about it. With that in mind I was pleasantly surprised to look down at my cuff on the way up to London and notice that it was perfectly layered – shirt, jacket then coat.

I shared this immediately with kookysistawiththehair, someone I knew would appreciate what I was talking about. Since it also made me think of the Sartorialist (which I’ve wanted to do an entry on for a while) I thought it would be a good way to get it into a post. If you get a chance, have a look on Scotts website, because if you have taken the time to read this article, you will probably appreciate what he has done for fashion in recent times. It’s also worth reading what he writes about his ‘’subject”, because it gives you an insight into the mind of someone who’s keen eye is always looking out for the smallest of details, a trait that has made him into inspiration for mood boards in studios all over the world.

Looking out for the small details that make something inspirational is one thing that I am going to try to do more this year. In a way this could be a resolution that for once, I keep.

Happy New Years to all and as always, keep it UJU

Karibuni(welcome) to uju from moi kookysistawiththehair,

I is UJU number 4. Expect anything to everything on my posts. I’m not really a fan of anonymous blogging as I would like you to be able to put the name to the face………

You are probably wondering what the smelly boot in the title is all about. Well I have been on a serious quest for almost a year now to find the perfect smelly boot after seeing this cover of Madonna’s-get into the groove single..

This poster inspired the quest as I just imagined how wonderful both outfits would be if paired with a smelly boot. well the reason they’re called smelly boots has nothing to do with the boots actually wiffin but just LOOKING like they smell.

My quest so far has led me to the All Saints smelly boot…

well although very hard, they’re very much on the expensive side so in the search of trying to find a cheaper version landed on River Island…..

Then I came to the realisation smelly boots from both shops look the same, conventional and very mainstream. They still don’t give as much of the hard worn vintage feel that I would like. Don’t get me wrong, they are very good looking boots but just not smelly enough. Then I just stumbled upon these…

THE PERFECT PAIRS OF SMELLY BOOTS BUT THEY ARE NOT AVAILABLE

OOOOOH DARN IT!! THE PERFECT PAIR OF SMELLY BOOT BUT THEY JUST CAN NOT BELONG TO ME!!

They’re for men so not available for the sista.CURSE YOU MEN CURSE YOU!!!!been in and out of vintage shops and everytime I spot the perfect pair they’re for MEN!!!!!Well I guess you won’t really find a puny little size 6 male in the millitary who’d donate the perfect pair of smelly boot for kookysistawiththehair *WIPES OFF TEAR*

WELL THE QUEST CONTINUES AND I SHALL UPDATE YOU ON THE PROGRESS .

I am by no means the biggest sneaker freak on the block. Actually I’m not really a sneaker freak at all. But I know I love the Air Jordan III’s. Released in the mid-to-late 80s, they brought the elephant print pattern trims that I love to see on Air Jordans nowadays (when they come around, which is rare). They were said to be Mr. Michael Jordan’s favourites, and whether or not this was just to market the sneakers is a bogus idea to waste time on, but they were marketed in most beautiful way.

I have to today an offering that I first have to credit Thomas ‘Top Cat’ ‘the Fury’ Clarke for the find. A series of commercials were done for Air Jordan, featuring Michael Jordan himself, directed by Spike Lee and featuring his alter-ego Mars Blackmon. They’re everything fresh from commercials that seems to have disappeared these days, So here’s a few of the adverts for you to enjoy.

Now ask yourself, is it the shoes? Is it the shoes?

It’s gotta be the shoes!

We are always looking for companies and artists that have big ideas and are starting off strong. Hanging out at my friends house today made me stumble right into one of these opportunities. She had received a great piece of design in the mail. This bit of design just happened to be on a shirt and as soon as I had a look at the promotional material that came along with it I knew that I had to look deeper into this company.

After a quick look on the website and a phone call to one of the founders gave me all the information I needed to conclude that this is a company to watch for many reasons, but I have outlined a few below.

1. They have a great design, clean and modern and most importantly all, it is echoed all through the products, the lay out of the website and even the way they have been promoting themselves. Also, looking at some of the promo shots, the designer is a great photographer, and well, I respect someone who takes great pictures that really encapsulate the brand and the way that they want to present themselves

2. These guys have beliefs and goals. The reason that this gives me confidence in their ability is that someone has followed a way of thinking all their life, is clearly dedicated. This dedication means that they are not likely to give up on something and I think that if they keep putting the work in and follow through on the statement that “both Josh and myself have decided that this year we need to do this pretty much full time to really make things happen.” they will build on their strong image, and have a great product.

3. They have new designs on the way, and designs in the pipeline. Meaning – they haven’t given up.

I’ve put up a few of their current designs, and a couple things that they are working on below. Alternatively you can check out their website and blog and see exactly what they are up to.
