On the 18th of June I am heading to Dubai to intern for a company called The Hay Group. I’ve decided that it is a good time to buy some new “work clothes” for the occasion. I’ve been informed that the dress code is smart casual, but I am never really sure what smart casual is. If I wore something that I thought was smart casual, but in a really outlandish colour, is it still constituted as smart? The reason I ask is because I came across these legendary chinos sold by Ralph Lauren in this great red colour, but I am not sure if they would be acceptable. What do you think?

Also fun fact for you about Chinos. The word Chino is actually a misnomer. They were originally cotton pants used for summer uniforms by the U.S Army. When the twill arrived in freight boxes, it was stamped with the country of origin; however the imprint read “Chino” instead of “China” and the name has stuck ever since. Interesting eh?

Keep it UJU

Cowboy poetry? Yessir, cowboy poetry. One of my favourite websites – folkstreams.net – a must-check-it-out for american folk mystics, yeilded to me in my state of 6 am ale-induced haze an old documentary on some real cowboy culture. There’s definitely something mystic about it, these solemn, simple people. but not hick-simple, more simple-pure. Their way with the wide-open spaces around them, their way with women, their way with words, becomes real appealing through this. And the wit, its charming. Simply put, it’s too, too nice.

If your eyes and ears are keen ones, smack that link up and have a search for the ‘cowboy poems’ film. Its there. For the less bothered reader, read on for a poem by one savvy, beardy cowboy by the name Wallace McRae. It’s worth a Yeehaw.

“What does reincarnation mean?”
A cowpoke asked his friend.
His pal replies, “It happens when
Yer life has reached its end.
They comb yer hair and warsh yer neck
And clean yer fingernails
And lay you in a padded box
Away from life’s travails.

“The box and you goes in a hole,
That’s been dug in the ground,
And reincarnation starts in when
You’re planted ‘neath a mound.
Them clods melt down, just like yer box,
And you who is inside.
And then you’re just beginnin’ on
Yer transformation ride.

In a while the grass’ll grow
Upon your rendered mound.
Till someday on your moldered grave
A lonely flower is found.
And say a horse should wander by
And graze upon this flower
That once wuz you, but now’s become
Yer vegetative bower.

“The posey that the horse done ate
Up with his other feed
Makes bone and fat and muscle
Essential to the steed.
But some is left that he can’t use
And so it passes through,
And finally lays upon the ground
This thing that once was you.

Then say by chance I wanders by
And sees this on the ground
And I wonders, and I ponders, at
This object that I found.
Why, I thinks of reincarnation
Of life, and death, and such,
And I come away concluding: Slim,
You ain’t changed all that much.”

man…he kills his buddy with that last line.

Big love,

I was recently in Dublin for a lacrosse tour, and fortunately I got to spend a day walking around the city before the mayhem commenced. I basically walked aimlessly around the city, and looked up at the buildings, something I normally do, to get a feel for the city. One of the more interesting buildings I came across was this one.

I looked at it for a while and didn’t notice the (what I would have thought) was a spelling error. What really drew me to it was the typography and the way that they used the whole building for the information. I can imagine lots of people walk that route every day and don’t give it a second glance, which is a shame.

I looked it up when I got home to see exactly what a ’sick and indicent’ roomkeepers is. What it turned out to be in fact, is an Inn, for the sick and indigent, the oldest charity in Dublin, founded in 1790. So a very worthy cause, housed in a very cool building. Have a look here if you want to find out more.

So next time you are walking your normal route, take a second to look up, you might be surprised.

Keep it UJU

I can’t tell if the title sounds like a euphemism or a metaphor or something, but I promise it’s not. All it means is that I got my mom’s old Ray Ban Outdoorsman fixed. These have literally been sitting in my room for 7 years and I just never got round to fixing them. Since I already owned two pairs of gold rimmed Aviators, I never got round to getting them repaired, but on one gorgeous sunny day I decided that these outdoorsman were different enough to warrant walking into town to see what I can do. Turns out it was easier than I thought. I walked in, asked if they had a screw for these, came back 10 minutes later, fixed, cleaned and looking beautiful, all for free. So really I had nothing to worry about all these years, apart from the sweet marks they leave on your nose.

After I got them fixed I decided to see if I could find any instances where these glasses have been worn in movies, and I came across this website (http://www.geeksunglasses.com/) that shows you who’s wearing what. I came across these two examples, which definitely makes them worth wearing.

The reason that I say newish, is because they’re new for me, in reality the age of these belts is probably about 30 years or more. One of them even had a sticker on it for $8.

I got hold of them two summers ago when I was rooting through the closets of my grandmas house and came across a plethora of sweet belts that used to belong to my grandpa. Unfortunately he was about a size 38, so I could really only wear these belts if the trousers that I was wearing fit perfectly, which really defeats the purpose of a belt. I took them anyways, thinking that I might one day put on some weight, and would need some new belts.

However, I really did not want to wait until I put on weight, or come to think of it, put on weight at all. So recently I had been thinking about how to shorten these belts, and the best that I could come up with was to cut it in half, take out some of the section, and then sew it back together, creating an unsightly overlap. I didn’t think that this would work so I left it. It was only when I came home for easter and my dad had talked about how he had removed the bit by the buckle, shortened it, and then sewed it back in place, leaving no trace of the work that had been done. I thought this was genius, so as soon as I got the chance, I shortened four belts, that I can now actually wear.

Just out of curiosity I was looking online to see what kind of similar belts I could find, and I came across a few quality examples from Ralph Lauren, check them out.
